Chocolate Raspberry Bliss Smoothie Bowl (Vegan, Paleo, GAPS)

Happy Easter Monday! Did you have a good long weekend? I hope you got to eat lots of delicious food and get in plenty of rest and relaxation. 

I spent my long weekend on call which means I was busy driving around the city to our various hospitals. So no rest and relaxation for this girl. But it's all good. I saw some interesting cases this weekend and I head to Florida on Saturday for vacation so soon I will be doing plenty of resting and relaxing. In the sun. With a book. On the beach.  It sounds amazing doesn't it? I can't wait! I haven't had any time off since the summer so this holiday seems long overdue. I am feeling a little burnt out these days I must admit. Nothing a little sunshine and ocean swimming can't fix though! And since I will be in the U.S I will be stocking up on some of my favourite items like Vital Proteins Grassfed Gelatin, Kerrygold Grassfed Butter (do you see a theme here) and some Beautycounter products that aren't yet available in Canada like their Dew Skin Tinted Moisturizer, Color Sweep Blush and Sea Salt Hair Spray. I will be leaving plenty of extra room in my suitcase that's for sure! 

You guys I have a new obsession. Smoothie bowls. I have never been one to like drinking smoothies, and usually eat mine with a spoon anyways, so putting them in a bowl was just a logical solution. I have been busy experimenting with various flavour combinations and this Chocolate Raspberry Smoothie Bowl is my new favourite. And we will get to the recipe shortly. But first....

Do any of you watch Scandal? Come on, there must be a few of you out there? I just started watching it recently and let's just say I am hooked! Netflix just makes it so easy to watch episode after episode. Why I am so addicted to this one I have no idea. It's so unrealistic! But somehow that Olivia Pope just sucks you in. I would make a terrible Olivia Pope! I could never do her job. Never ever. I totally hate dealing with conflict, and that's basically all her job is! It's a good thing I went into medicine and not law. Just saying... 

So I learned one very valuable lesson this week: puppies + dirty snow = a terrible combination! Think muddy water flying everywhere! Seriously it was like they bathed in a dirt bath. What a mess. A muddy disastrous mess! But I have to say the post-bath puppy madness was hilarious. Anyone with a dog knows what I am talking about. That ridiculous energy that being wet somehow gives to dogs. It almost made up for the horrible mess that I was left to clean up. Almost...

Chocolate Raspberry Bliss Smoothie Bowl Recipe


2 ripe bananas
1 1/2 cups fresh or frozen raspberries
1 1/2 cups full fat coconut milk (I recommend this brand
1/4 cup melted coconut butter or coconut manna (buy here

Optional additions: 
1-2 TBSP grassfed gelatin (not if vegan) - this brand is my favourite (use the blue container) 
1-2 TBSP chia seeds 
1 cup fresh spinach
1/2 avocado

Optional topping ideas:
Fresh berries
Shredded coconut (I use this brand)
Raw seeds or nuts
Cacao nibs (find them here)
Drizzle of honey or maple syrup


1. Place all the ingredients in your high speed blender (including any optional additions)
2. Blend well until smooth
3. Transfer the smoothie to a bowl (or glass if you prefer)
4. Add the optional toppings 
5. Serve and enjoy!

The Best Paleo Cereal and Granola Recipes (Grain Free, SCD, GAPS)

Hi friends. I must apologize for the lack of post last week. Unfortunately real life gets in the way of blogging sometimes. I was madly finishing a grand rounds presentation that I gave last Wednesday, and was also up to my ears in all the paperwork I need to do to start working as a rheumatologist in July. Yes friends, soon I will be a real life independently functioning specialist. It's crazy to think about. And terrifying. So let's not talk about that anymore. Let's focus on better, happier things. Like food.

I remember when I first eliminated grains from my diet one of the things I missed the most was cereal. And granola. That crunchy, sweet goodness was just so hard to give up! I realize part of the difficulty in giving up those foods was likely due to the addictive properties of gluten, but for some reason I didn't crave other gluten containing foods as much as those two food items. And while I no longer crave cereal or granola, I still do appreciate foods with a great crunchy texture. And of course a little sweetness is never bad either. So I decided to collect the best paleo cereal and granola recipes and put them together in a recipe wrap-up for you. Rather than eating them for breakfast, I actually prefer to eat my grain free cereal or granola as a snack. But whatever way you choose to eat them, whether it's for breakfast, as a snack or even for dessert, you can't go wrong with any of these recipes. I wold love to know which ones are your favourite.

Coconut Mint Fudge (Paleo, Vegan, SCD, GAPS)

Do I have a treat for you guys today! Coconut Mint Fudge. This stuff is good. Like really good. Like eat an entire batch in one day good (but who would do that?). 

But first, how was your week? Mine was good! I am on a sports medicine block right now which is really fun. I never got to rotate through sports medicine as a medical student so I had no idea what to expect, but I have really liked it. Brings me back to my former athlete and kinesiology days. In fact, the clinic where I am working is in the same building as the complex where I did my undergraduate degree and the pool where I spent thousands of hours swimming growing up. Talk about bringing me back to the good old days. I have been busy working on mastering my Lachmans and McMurray's special tests these last couple weeks and I am on a mission to get them down before I finish in one more week (if you have no idea what I'm talking about no need to worry... hopefully you won't ever need to know!). 

I also submitted my Nature Review article over the weekend! Yay! That thing has been quite the labour of love (or some might say hate) over the last 9 months. Fingers crossed that there won't be any more revisions this time! I have been working on this thing for a ridiculous amount of time. At least it feels that way to me. Residency is just so fun sometimes....

Can we talk about something serious for a second friends? 

Donald Trump. 

As a Canadian I 100% do not understand how he could potentially become the next president of the United States. Not only is the majority of the stuff that comes out of that man's mouth completely ridiculous, most of it isn't even true! Honestly the idea that he really could become president terrifies me. So if any of you are Donald supporters I would love to hear your thoughts. What do you love about him? Please fill me in. 

Okay rant of the day over. Let's talk food. Like this Coconut Mint Fudge. Don't ask me how I thought of this one, but I am definitely glad I did. Erik and I have been inhaling these. Seriously, the first batch didn't last more than a day. So I was forced to make a second batch so I could take some photos. Yes forced. And while I called this one Coconut Mint Fudge, some have told me it tastes like white chocolate and mint. Either way they taste delicious. Plus they fit with the paleo, vegan, GAPS and SCD diets, so they should be safe for almost everyone to eat. Another bonus? These are super easy to make! Throw everything into your food processor  for a few minutes, transfer it to a pan and let it sit int the freezer for a few hours. Yep that's it. That simple. The worst part is having to wait for it to set in the freezer. Because some of us are just not that patient. But these are worth the wait trust me. Coconut Mint Fudge Recipe


1 1/2 cups raw cashews (preferably soaked and dehydrated first) 
1 cup packed fresh mint leaves
1/2 cup coconut butter, melted (you can also use coconut manna - find it here)  
1/2 cup full fat coconut milk (I recommend this brand
1/3 cup coconut oil, melted (this brand is my favourite) 
1/4 cup honey (ideally locally produced) (or use maple syrup for vegan) 


1. Place all the ingredients in your food processor and blend until smooth
2. Line an 8"x 8" pan with parchment paper (you can use a glass or metal pan)
3. Pour the ingredients from your food processor onto the parchment paper
4. Spread evenly with a spoon or knife
5. Place the pan in the freezer for ~2 hours
6. Remove from the freezer and let thaw for 5-10 minutes
7. Cut the fudge into desired sized pieces
8. Serve and enjoy!
