Only about 10% of the 10,000 chemicals commonly found in personal care products have safety data.

The European Union bans over 1,400 ingredients from its personal care products. Canada has banned less than half that amount and the USA has banned only 11 of them.

Did you know that many of the skin care and beauty products you use on a regular basis contain toxic chemicals that have been linked to cancer, reproductive issues and hormone imbalances? No? Don't worry, I didn't learn about these disturbing facts until recently either. Like most people, I assumed that the products on the shelves must be safe. Otherwise how could they get approved for human use? Well the answer is simple, when it comes to the personal care industry there are very few regulations, so products don't have to be tested for safety. Scary isn't it? Companies are allowed to use known toxins, without even disclosing those ingredients. Yes that's right, let that sink in. They don't have to disclose all the ingredients in their products. So you could be being exposed to numerous toxic compounds without even knowing it. What's even worse is that some of those chemicals you are putting on your skin get absorbed into your bloodstream in less than 30 seconds. So it's not just your skin that is being exposed to those harmful chemicals, but the rest of your body as well.

Luckily the news isn't all bad. There are companies out there that are actively working to change the personal care industry. I have spent a lot of time researching these companies, and I am excited to share what I have learned with you to help you and your family make safer, healthier choices.

In an effort to clean up my own beauty and skin care routine I am excited to announce that I have recently partnered with BeautycounterBeautycounter has banned over 1500 ingredients, all while ensuring that their products perform well, and are as indulgent as any luxury beauty brand. I didn't only fall in love with Beautycounter because their products are safe and work well, but I wanted to work with a company that is working on making real change. Beautycounter is dedicated to making changes at the legislative level and creating a safe skin care movement. They are actively working on reforming the current laws regulating the beauty industry, in the hopes that other companies will follow their strict safety guidelines. I am extremely proud to represent Beautycounter and everything they stand for. To learn more about this amazing company please click here.

Here is an interview with Gregg Renfrew, the founder of Beautycounter. Listening to her talk makes me so proud to be a part of this company and everything they believe in. Please take a few minutes to learn more about this amazing brand.

Like many of you, I have struggled with a few different skin issues in my adult life. Keratosis Pilaris, otherwise known as chicken skin or KP (or those annoying little red dots on the back of arms), and adult acne. Changing to the paleo diet, learning how to take care of my skin through exfoliation and cleaning up my skin care products allowed me to heal my keratosis pilaris completely within 3 months. You can read how I did this here.

Unfortunately, my adult acne has been much harder for me to cure. Any of you out there suffering from acne know how frustrating, embarrassing, and just plain annoying it can be. I can't tell you how much money I have wasted in the last couple years trying to fix it (we are talking thousands of dollars for sure). I have tried so many things from your generic over the counter products, to prescription agents, to many different natural brands that have worked well for so many others. Sadly, my skin just never responded. But, within a week of switching to Beautycounter face products my acne started to clear. I cannot even begin to describe how excited I am about this. Not in years has my skin felt this soft and smooth. And those painful cystic lesions that I am prone to get on my chin and jawline have started to resolve. Here are a few of the Beautycounter products that I have been using to help clear my skin:

Nourishing Cleansing Balm. I cannot sing enough praise for this product! While being acne prone, my skin is also extremely dry. Think flaking skin everywhere. This also has a lot to do with the dry climate that I live in. And unfortunately, many acne products (including natural ones) actually work by drying out the skin more, which has only exacerbated my problem. This Cleansing Balm has become my new go-to product. I have been using it as my cleanser, and night time moisturizer. I clean my face with it first, and then apply a thin layer to my dried skin as my face cream. During the day I switch to the Nourishing Night Cream for my moisturizer. If your skin isn't that dry I would suggest using the Nourishing Day Cream during the day and either the Nourishing Night Cream or the Nourishing Cleansing Balm at night

The Nourishing Rose Water Mist as a toner. I must admit that I have never really used toners before, but after some much needed education regarding proper skin care I have now incorporated this item into my daily routine. I spray my skin with this after washing and patting my skin dry. Not only does it smell amazing but if leaves my skin feeling so soft. I have also been using it on my back and it has been working wonders on clearing my back acne.

Face oils. Now I realize that many people are nervous about putting oil on their face. But when it comes to acne, especially adult acne, in many cases it is an overproduction of oil that is part of the problem. So by applying face oils, you actually help your skin balance out its natural oil production. And in my case, I have pretty thick, dry skin, so that oil often gets trapped, leading to some pretty painful acne lesions. I have been using Face Oil Number 3, also know as the Balancing Oil. I apply 3-4 drops on top of my moisturizer to help seal in that hydration and help balance my skin. One common mistake is that people often use face oils alone, when they are actually meant to be used on top of moisturizers. They work best when used in combination. I also apply this oil to any acne lesions that I have on my back to help them clear up even faster.

The Charcoal Cleansing Bar. This stuff is like gold for those with acne! Charcoal works by detoxifying the skin, pulling out those impurities that are clogging your pores and contributing to acne in the first place. I use this as a face cleanser at least once a day (twice if I workout) on both my face, chest and back. There is a reason this is Beautycounter's most popular product. It really does work! And it's not just meant for those with acne. Charcoal is very soothing to the skin and will help refine the complexion and even out your skin tone as well, even if your skin is already acne free.

Some of my other favourite Beautycounter products include:

The Daily Shampoo and Daily Conditioner. Truth be told I never thought too much about what I was washing my hair with. I had been using the same brand for years, and I thought it was working well enough. That was until my hair stylist recently told me she had never seen my hair so unhealthy, and had to chop a good 5 inches off of it. Now I don't have a huge emotional tie to my hair, but I figured it was time for a change. And oh my goodness! Honestly I was shocked the first time I used these products. My hair was so soft! And I didn't have to use any products to make it look good. Well it wasn't a fluke, every time I wash my hair with the Daily Shampoo and Conditioner I get the same results. And even better? My back acne has started to clear since I switched to these products! For that reason alone I cannot recommend these products enough! And because they aren't filled with any extra ingredients, a little really does go a long way. These bottles last for months.

Now there are still many products that I have yet to try, so I will keep posting updates as I use them.
